Arthritis Medications
Numerous medications are available for the treatment of arthritis. These medications alleviate the symptoms of arthritis and even minimize joint damage; however, they do not eliminate the disease, except in the case of infectious arthritis which can be cured with antibiotics.
At present, there are over 100 medications and drugs being used in the treatment of arthritis. Some of these medications include analgesic drugs, corticosteroids, COX-2 inhibitors, muscle relaxers, herbal remedies, topical medications and a lot more.
Analgesics are usually used as pain relievers and are administered orally. Corticosteroids, which come in pill, cream and injection forms, are frequently used for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis because they reduce swelling and suppress the immune system.
Due to possible side effects and differences in individual response to a specific drug, it is quite difficult to find the most effective medication or combination of medications for the treatment of arthritis. Thus, it is best to know more about the various arthritis medications that are available and to consult a doctor before taking any kind of medication. Normally, a doctor only prescribes a certain kind of medication after making a diagnosis and identifying the kind of arthritis that his or her patient has.
Adverse effects of arthritis medications may include headache, nausea or upset stomach.
